Formula One is an exciting sport, and fans are always excited by the possibility of the Grand Prix happening in their country. According to the latest reports, the country of Colombia recently made a proposal for hosting an F1 race in the near future.

South American countries are known to have a crazy F1 fan base, as witnessed at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Now, the possibility of having a race in Colombia makes things even more exciting.

Colombia wants to host an F1 Grand Prix

On Saturday, Colombian President Iván Duque Márquez made a surprising announcement. The President stated that Barranquilla, one of Colombia’s most influential cities, has submitted the proposal to host an F1 race.

He mentioned that Barranquilla’s mayor, Jaime Pumarejo, suggested hosting a motorsport event in the city. According to the proposed idea, the circuit will be a semi-street track.

The President said as quoted by Motorsports.com, “The mayor has already had talks with the Formula 1 management. We need to make some adjustments, but on a route that the organizers will review, it could be a semi-urban track.” (Translated from Turkish via Google)

“There are only 22 cities in the world that can host Formula 1. 320,000 spectators go to these tracks in three days. They spend an average of 600 dollars a day and come from more than 100 countries. 60 thousand tourists come to the country for an average of 10 days. It’s coming,” Jaime Pumarejo said.

When is the first race of the 2022 season?

The 2022 Formula One season is edging closer and closer and fans can’t wait for the new era of racing. The first round of the championship will take place in Bahrain; it will be held from the 18th to the 20th of March.
