A skating error and a failed magic button resulted in Lewis Hamilton bowing out of the Azerbaijan GP in 2021. While the confused man asked, “Did I leave the magic on?”, the real magic has been quite off recently with the ongoing Mercedes slump. And even though Hamilton doesn’t count Baku 2021 as a mistake, the now reigning champion rival clan is quick to do that to the 7x champion. Red Bull TP has now highlighted the lag on the Briton’s Baku-like overheating issue, which led to Max Verstappen claiming the lead.

The Mercedes boys Hamilton and George Russell lined P2 and P3 for the Australian GP. A result that they themselves weren’t expecting. And when the lights went out, a blazing Russell snubbed Max Verstappen to take the lead of the race. And heading towards turn 3, Hamilton saw an opportunity to pull one on the RB champion, and so he did. However, a red flag and a restart later, a slow Silver Arrow, couldn’t keep Adrian Newey’s creation at bay. While the Brackley clan believes that it was the sheer speed of the Red Bull, Horner believes otherwise.

As quoted by Express, Horner said, “First of all, I think Lewis made a mistake on that lap. Moreover, we had completely set up the car for the race. Maybe Hamilton heated up his tires a little too aggressively, so he suffered a bit more in the race.”

While taking a dig at one driver wasn’t enough, Horner then went on to take a dig at the entire team for how they used to mask their actual speed in the dominant era.

Christian Horner fires back at Lewis Hamilton and co. for sandbagging antics

While it is common knowledge that Red Bull is ahead of the entire team and has the potential to lap half of them, Christian Horner feels they are not hiding their real potential, hinting at what Mercedes did to Ferrari in 2019 testing. Horner laughed off remarks of a confused George Russell, saying while the sandbagging claim is flattering, Red Bull isn’t like Mercedes.

Responding to Russell’s claim that Red Bull has “seven-tenths advantage,” Horner pointing at the team’s sandbagging history replied, “That’s very generous of him, I’m flattered. He’d know too well from his team about those kinds of advantages.”
