The new rulebook that the FIA and Formula 1 introduced in 2022 was supposed to make F1 more equitable again. The sport promised the fan base closer racing and a tighter pecking order. That being said, while this has been true for 9 out of the 10 teams on the grid, Red Bull has simply aced the new regulations. As a consequence, the Milton-Keynes-based team have been running away, dominantly from the rest of the pack.

The pace differential between the Bulls and any of their close rivals such as Mercedes and Ferrari has been staggering. But while Red Bull settles down in their accommodation on cloud nine, the team are well aware that fortunes in this sport don’t take that long to turn on you.

How the season has progressed prompted Ferrari man Carlos Sainz to demand the team to “go and check something very different from where we are now,” as quoted by Motorsport.com. This has given wind to rumors that the Scuderia is now considering scrapping the SF-23 completely for a “B-Spec” car.

The ramifications of Ferrari putting this into action isn’t lost on Red Bull boss Christian Horner. When asked whether he feels the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari can catch them up, he said, “It’s still a long season, and they’ve got a lot of development time available to them. So, I mean, let’s see,” on the F1 Nation podcast.

“I keep hearing about massive upgrades for Mercedes coming and significant upgrades for Ferrari. So, you know if they [Ferrari] do have a B-spec car then things can change quite quickly.”

The rumors of this supposed B-Spec car have been shut down by the team. But if even the idea of this gives Red Bull a shiver down their spines, why isn’t Ferrari considering it?

Ferrari fears Red Bull solution

For a team like Ferrari, enough should be enough. Lagging behind Red Bull, the way that they have done in these past few seasons is simply not acceptable for the Tifosi or the hierarchy. Yet, in the current state of F1 economics, creating a fresh challenger mid-season isn’t Frederic Vasseur‘s cup of tea.

Vasseur explained to Motorsport.com, “To do a new project during the season, to start from scratch, to do a new car with the cost cap, but also considering the restriction of the wind tunnel time, I don’t want to say that it’s impossible, but it’s very difficult.”

“Also, on our side, we have the feeling, and I hope that we are right, that we are going in the right direction, that we have still tons of room for improvement on the car.”
