The latest episode of ESPN’s podcast “Unlapped” takes center stage with none other than Red Bull Team Principal, Christian Horner. At the heart of this riveting discussion lies the enigmatic figure known as the “Rogue” Taskmaster, Helmut Marko. Renowned for his relentless pursuit of excellence and unapologetic approach within the Red Bull Racing team, Marko has rightfully earned his formidable moniker. Although, Horner gave this a great analogy as well with that of the 3-time champion Niki Lauda.

In an exclusive interview, Horner joins the dynamic trio of Katie George, Laurence Edmondson, and Nate Saunders to provide listeners with unprecedented insights into the inner workings of Red Bull Racing. Horner draws striking parallels between Marko’s managerial style and that of the legendary Formula 1 icon, Niki Lauda, who left an indelible mark on the sport.

Born in Graz, Austria, Helmut Marko‘s journey in the world of motorsport began with a notable connection – he was a close school friend of the late Jochen Rindt, who later went on to become the Formula 1 World Champion in 1970. During the episode, Horner recounted his experiences working with Marko, detailing the firm and demanding leadership that has become Marko’s trademark. Horner remarks:

“Communication Manager’s nightmare: when Helmut goes rogue, then you guys will get a headline. But, he just calls it as he sees it; he just will tell you what he thinks, which in many respects is very similar to how Niki Lauda was – same generation, same makeup in many ways. There’s great respect for Helmut, the ways he has contributed over the years, and yeah, he is 80 years old and he’s still looking for purple sectors.”

Drawing intriguing parallels with the late Niki Lauda, Horner highlighted how both men shared an unyielding determination to succeed, driven by an unwavering passion for the sport they love. Although not in Formula 1, it was in endurance racing where Marko found more success. In 1971, he achieved a remarkable victory at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, driving a Martini-Porsche 917K.

Helmut Marko Believes Perez Faces Potential Competition Only From Two Drivers

With only two Grand Prix victories under his belt this season, there are doubts about whether Sergio Perez can maintain his current standing. Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, believes that aside from the obvious contender, Max Verstappen, two other drivers could pose a significant challenge to Perez in future races.

Marko points to multiple-time champion, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, as one of Perez’s potential rivals. Another name on Marko’s radar is Fernando Alonso, who, despite being in the Aston Martin camp, has shown flashes of brilliance that could pose a threat to Red Bull’s dominance.

“For Checo, a second place is like a victory at the moment,” Marko recounted to De Telegraaf. “Max can hardly be beaten. I think maybe only Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso could be a little closer to him. But that early part of the season led Checo to dream of becoming the first-ever Mexican Formula 1 champion. That dream influenced his performance, especially in qualifying,”  Marko concluded.
