Is Sergio Perez's time at Red Bull coming to an end after the Hungarian GP disaster?

Hungaroirng was witness to yet another Sergio Perez mishap. Just when he needed the comeback, the Mexican found himself out in Q1 for the fourth time in the last six races. This has left fans disappointed, least to say his team isn’t happy either. Not just Helmut Marko, this time team boss Christian Horner has also taken a tough stance. Meanwhile, Perez’s seat is at risk after the Hungarian GP qualifying session, with just one more race to prove himself.

Looks like Christian Horner and Co. are running out of patience. At the end of today’s session, Horner was considerably upset with Checo. And why shouldn’t he be? After showing a good performance in the practice sessions, Perez’s crash came out of the blue. Meanwhile, Dr. Helmut Marko continued with his monologue of the Spa ultimatum. But the question here is: even if Perez succeeds in Spa, will that be enough to keep him? Given his consistent performance failures, will Red Bull take further risks?

“These kinds of discussions should happen internally, and not through the media, but it is clear that we cannot keep walking one-legged,” stated the team principal. At this point, only Max Verstappen is pulling Red Bull’s carriage ahead. However, despite the comprehensive upgrades, the Austrian team hasn’t been super impressive in the last two days. Meanwhile, Helmut told Sky Germany, “We wait until the next race in Spa and then make a decision.” So, the deadline is near. By this time next week, Sergio Perez will either have his seat or will bid farewell to the team.

Checo was the ninth-fastest in Q1 when soft drizzles graced the track. This is when the Mexican crashed his Red Bull RB20 at the exit of Turn 8, heavily damaging the rear end. The crash brought out red flags. Fortunately, Perez returned to the Red Bull garage unharmed. With speculations building on the 34-year-old’s future, finishing in P16 has certainly raised eyebrows. “It was really, really bad timing,” Checo said. He further explained that the rain and damp sides made it difficult for him to control the car before spinning into the wall.

On the other hand, Christian Horner called the incident “a huge shame.” Horner was particularly upset with the Mexican’s Silverstone debacle and called the situation “unsustainable.” The team principal was surely not ready for a repeat of previous episodes. A disappointed Christian Horner stated: “Yesterday was looking quite strong for him and obviously tricky conditions but it’s the same for everybody. He was up on his lap time and I think he could see probably the rain on his visor and the car just got away from him. Unfortunately, it’s done quite a lot of damage.”
