“What an idiot,” screamed Fernando Alonso, addressing Lewis Hamilton after a racing incident that put him out of the top contention at the 2022 Belgian GP. While the battles between old rivals had become a rare sight, 2023 has served it back to us. With Aston Martin making a 2.4-second improvement, the first 3 races of 2023 have given us some fun moments between the old rivals and ex-McLaren teammates. And the back and forth at Australian GP presented with a ‘now what your next move’ situation.

Alonso couldn’t quite pull a Bahrain-like move on the 7x champion at Albert Park, where he stayed stuck behind the Mercedes. Multiple restarts and racing incidents occurred at the GP. But the legendary duo kept their head down, mainly battling against each other. Alonso even went on record to say that he tried forcing an error out of Hamilton, but the latter just didn’t give in. The Mercedes boys Hamilton and George Russell lined P2 and P3 for the Australian GP. When the lights went out, a blazing Russell snubbed Max Verstappen to take the lead of the race. And heading towards turn 3, Hamilton saw an opportunity and overtook Verstappen as well. However, due to a red flag and a subsequent restart later, a slow Merc couldn’t fight the fast Raging Bull. While Mercedes believes that it was the sheer speed of the Red Bull, Horner points a finger at Hamilton.

As quoted by Express, Horner said, “First of all, I think Lewis made a mistake on that lap. Moreover, we had completely set up the car for the race. Maybe Hamilton heated up his tires a little too aggressively, so he suffered a bit more in the race.”
