Max Verstappen talked about what a herculean task it would be to beat Charles Leclerc when he accumulated a 46-point over him. That was last year when the Monegasque started the season with a banger in Bahrain. He then followed it up with another win in Australia. All signs pointed toward a Ferrari resurgence. However, all that advantage disappeared once the Austrian team got rid of its devils. Some would say the Maranello team threw away the advantage by failing to develop at a similar pace. The current season has exposed their weaknesses even further. Will that drive Leclerc away from the Prancing Horse?

On the other end of the spectrum is Lewis Hamilton. The Briton, 38, is in the twilight of his career and is very clearly hanging on just to win that elusive, never achieved before 8th world championship. Given how affairs are taking place at Mercedes since last year, that looks to be a distant dream for him. As he enters the final year of his contract with the Silver Arrows, speculations are running over a possible switch to Ferrari. Recently, some reports even suggested that the Red team offered him a $49 million deal. While all parties involved have categorically denied any such development, a switch between the two ace drivers cannot be ruled out just yet.

Leclerc and Hamilton may be sailing in different boats, but their fate is pushing them to cross each other’s path. Some feel a switch will not work for either driver, given the way both Ferrari and Mercedes are performing. However, the former F1 driver turned expert Marc Surer definitely believes the move could prove to be a fruitful one for the Monegasque.

In a recent interview on Formel1.de’s YouTube channel, Surer said, “he (Leclerc) has to say yes.”

“It’s a bit muddled with Ferrari at the moment. There’s no bright spot either. […] If he gets a chance, he should switch teams. That would certainly do him good.” [Translated using Google]

“Why should it get better? A new opportunity with Mercedes would be ideal for him. Maybe it would be a bit calmer then. Although: driving next to a [George] Russell, you can’t speak of calm!”

Going by Charles’ current performances, Surer believes he has outgrown his current team. Their car isn’t up to the level at which he is capable and used to driving.

After a successful outing in Baku where Leclerc scored the team’s first podium finish of the season, Ferrari came back to their miserable self in Miami. dashed his own hopes of a good result after crashing into the barriers during Q3 finishing P7. Team boss Frederic Vasseur, however, did not blame him for the crash. In fact, he lauded him for trying to push his own and the car’s limits. That is exactly the reason Surer believes Leclerc must switch.

“The problem is that Leclerc often drives faster than the car can. And then it’s always on the edge of a knife, always just before departure. I think that’s what happened at Le Castellet last year too, that under pressure he just wanted to get more out of it than was possible, and then at some point the mistake came. And that’s dangerous because at some point he has to have a car with me where he can take it easy and still win. But he hasn’t at the moment.”
