F1’s car performance is always a mesmerizing spectacle, one where every turn, every pit stop, and every strategy decision can tilt the scales of victory. For Ferrari, this spectacle has been a complex choreography of power and precision. Although, their choreography of performance has often faced many challenges in the past few years. Charles Leclerc often is a prime victim at the Scuderia of these issues hindering his F1 goals. While Ferrari aims to sort out its obstacles in their quest for glory, Leclerc is also trying to be patient despite a worrying problem that has become an Achilles’ heel for the Italian team.
The Tifosi had hoped that Ferrari may challenge for the title this year. Though they find themselves at an intriguing juncture of deja vu due to their tire performance. The Scarlet red cars have been struggling badly with tire degradation. As the 2023 season unfolds, the question on everyone’s lips is simple: What does Ferrari have up its sleeve for improved tire health?
The tire management issues that continue to plague Ferrari have become a recurring theme in the 2023 season. Contrary to one of its engineers Jock Clear’s conviction that the SF-23 is not a tire-eater, the data suggests otherwise. At the start of the season, the team struggled to maintain consistency across different tire compounds. Switching compounds often led to a disconcerting drop in the car’s performance.

Following the Canadian GP, Charles Leclerc remains skeptical about the team’s progress in tire management. According to Motorsport-Total, he explained, “I think that tire management wasn’t a big deal for anyone today… I’d wait until Austria to hopefully confirm there what we felt this weekend”, attributing the improved performance in Canada to the unique characteristics of the track rather than a fundamental step forward in Ferrari’s handling of tire wear.
Leclerc also reports, “This weekend I went in quite a different direction with the set-up and it felt a little bit better. It gave me a bit more consistency on all mixes. That’s good.” Apparently, a change in setup seemed to enhance the car’s consistency across tire types which surely will get jotted down in the pit wall notebooks.

At the Miami GP, Ferrari’s struggle got some relief. Leclerc’s early pit stop for hard tires saw him stuck in traffic, a move that didn’t pay off as expected. Despite these challenges, Ferrari’s SF-23 did not show significantly greater tire degradation than its competitors, such as Aston Martin. This suggests that maybe this tire degradation issue for the Italian outfit is resolvable.
A glimpse into Red Bull’s performance might provide some insight for Ferrari as the RB19 is so much kinder to its tires. Max Verstappen complained about understeer in faster corners, indicating difficulty with his tires. This is a reminder that adjusting the car’s setup for better tire management, particularly in cornering, could be beneficial.
