Comparisons will always be made in F1. Remember when Sebastian Vettel was compared to Michael Schumacher after he won 4 championships in 4 years? Vettel was expected to break his fellow German’s 7 World Title records. However, Charles Leclerc was also compared to an F1 legend and chosen to be his worthy heir despite the Red Bull taskmaster’s bold claims after Max Verstappen achieved a historic feat. Why was Leclerc compared to this F1 legend?

Max Verstappen equaled Ayrton Senna’s record by winning the Canadian GP. Helmut Marko made a bold statement after Verstappen won his 41st GP to equal Senna’s win record. Verstappen is only 25 and yet already has two championships to his name. The dominance showcased by the Dutchman is unparalleled. Marko suggested that only Max Verstappen deserves to be compared to Ayrton Senna.

Despite Marko’s statement, Riccardo Ceccarelli, The Formula medicine doctor, drew similarities between Charles Leclerc and Ayrton Senna. He advised how Leclerc is loveable in the same way that Senna was as he highlighted the Monegasque’s behavior. According to a tweet uploaded by @Leclercsletters, Ceccarelli said: “I’ve always said that behavior-wise, Charles has always reminded me of the legendary Senna because he’s a well-mannered boy, a sensitive boy, a kind boy, a person you can’t help but love.”

Would Charles Leclerc be able to continue the legacy Senna has left behind? The Monegasque is arguably the best qualifier on the grid, extracting the most out of his car. However, Ferrari’s struggles with reliability, race pace, and strategies have let him down. Leclerc was let down by Ferrari once again at the Canadian GP qualifying when he asked for slick tires in Q2 but was kept out on intermediate tires. However, Frederic Vasseur explained the reasons for the same.

Alex Albon went out on dry tires on the drying track in Q2 at the Canadian GP. Leclerc felt that the track was dry enough for slicks and asked his team for the same. Nevertheless, Ferrari opted to follow a strategy similar to most of the teams. By the time Leclerc pitted and went out on slicks, it started raining again. It was a case of the Monegasque being on the wrong tires at the wrong time. Nevertheless, Vasseur came out to defend his strategist and explained that it’s a team sport and a team decision was made,

According to Motorsport Germany, Frederic Vasseur said, “A driver cannot make a decision alone because he does not know what is happening around him on the track. That means it has to be a joint decision.”
