Despite a positive result and both drivers finishing inside the top ten, Mercedes is far from where they want to be. Lewis Hamilton drove brilliantly but was still passed by Fernando Alonso and, despite getting close to Carlos Sainz, couldn’t really catch him. There are a lot of holes in the W14, but the men back at Brackley are tirelessly trying to fill them. This is exactly what Toto Wolff communicated after the race in Azerbaijan.

Ever since the start of the 2023 season, Hamilton has voiced his opinion on the flawed concept of the W14. Initially reluctant to comply, Mercedes finally came around and accepted the flaw. Despite that, the Brit is yet to see changes and probably why he’s delaying his contract extension with the team.

However, after Baku, Toto Wolff made a statement as revealed by PitDebrief and quoted by the Fastest Pitstop, which might upset at least one team in particular.

“To catch [Red Bull] up, either we all have to do a better job, or change the regulations,” said Wolff. A statement that might upset the Austrian team. However, the Mercedes boss quickly put merit above a helping hand from the FIA.

“I don’t think we need to do the second one. I think we need to win on merit. Winning on merit means being more clever and steeper development slope than Red Bull.”

“I don’t want to change the goals yet. I always want to think that we are here to fight for a world championship, even if it doesn’t seem realistic. We are only at the beginning, and I want to keep the team motivated to do the best possible job. There are many innovations in the pipeline. The layout of the car will change at Imola and we will see what this step entails,” revealed Wolff.
