Fernando Alonso might come across as the ideal F1 driver. The Spaniard has great 1-lap speed, is great on tires, in wet weather, and in dry, has huge amounts of capacity inside the cockpit, and is hilarious in nature. However, everyone has their own set of imperfections and so does Alonso. The 41-year-old’s biggest flaw was highlighted as the reason why he failed to beat Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher’s coveted record. What is this imperfection in Alonso’s shining armor?

Fernando Alonso’s move to Aston Martin can very well be termed the revival of the Spanish Mastermind. The clinical Fernando Alonso that we’re seeing this season is a wonderful sight for the sore eyes of his fans from the previous season. Many of the newer F1 fans might beg to ask the question, ‘Why didn’t Fernando Alonso win more championships with such talent?’

Well, we’ve asked ourselves the same question multiple times. Fernando Alonso won his only 2 championships quite early in his F1 career with Renault. The Spaniard did come close to the title multiple times but never won it. David Coulthard on the Formula for Success podcast Max Verstappen’s dominance isn’t enjoyable for Lewis Hamilton’s fans. However, Hamilton did have his dominating run as well.

Coulthard further explained how all exceptional drivers had a dominating car with the exception of Fernando Alonso. As per the podcast, David Coulthard said “They’re all good drivers but there have been a few exceptional: Senna Schumacher as you mentioned. These guys find the dominant cars. And it usually gives them the opportunity to add multiple titles. The only one that probably hasn’t been amongst the exceptional drivers has been Alonso.”

Eddie Jordan added to the statement and said: “We believe he [Fernando Alonso] went for the money.” Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher, both won the majority of their titles with a dominant stint with a team, namely Mercedes and Ferrari respectively. It is widely believed that Fernando Alonso moved from team to team just for the sake of money, which probably cost him a chance at winning more titles.

What all F1 teams have Fernando Alonso driven for?

Fernando Alonso started his F1 Career with Minardi before being promoted to Renault for the 2003 season. After a successful stint with Renault, winning his only 2 championships to date with the team, the Spaniard made a move to Mclaren for the 2007 season. Alonso came teasingly close to the title for the 2007 season, finishing only 1 point behind the title winner Kimi Raikkonen and equal on points with Rookie teammate Lewis Hamilton.

2008 and 2009 were spent at Renault after a turbulent season alongside Lewis Hamilton at McLaren. No great success came at Renault this time. In 2010, Fernando Alonso signed with Ferrari and stayed there until 2014. Alonso came close to winning the title twice with Ferrari in 2010 and 2012, finishing less than 5 points behind Sebastian Vettel in both seasons. Then came the torturous stint back at McLaren, which will forever be remembered for the “GP2 Engine” remark.

It should be noted that Alonso probably would’ve had a shot at Nico Rosberg’s seat at Mercedes had he not been engaged with McLaren in a contract. Following that, Alonso decided to take a break from F1 and returned with Alpine to the Grid for the 2021 season. The latest move to Aston Martin seems to be the best move made by Alonso in his whole career, with future prospects of the team looking very bright.
