Carlos Sainz‘s delay in deciding his future team has led Williams to look for more options in the driver’s market. With only a few options left, Sainz must make haste, or else he could find himself without a team next season. Meanwhile, Williams’ boss, James Vowles has a few names on his list. And that list includes the recently expelled Esteban Ocon, which seems good news for the Frenchman. On the other hand, Carlos Sainz is finding himself in an uneasy situation.
Sainz received offers from Sauber/Audi and Williams for next season. Just as he neared a decision, Alpine intensified efforts to sign him, complicating matters. With Flavio Briatore back at Renault, Alpine aims to secure drivers early under Luca de Meo’s direction, prioritizing car development. Meanwhile, Sainz has paused his decision-making and delayed his 2025 plans to consider Alpine’s offers.
This revelation has opened doors for other drivers, especially for Esteban Ocon. While Sauber is still willing to wait for Sainz, Williams feels it to be of utmost importance to find Alex Albon his teammate. “The team [Williams] wants a race winner on board for next season, with its main targets understood to be Valtteri Bottas and Esteban Ocon,” MOTORSPORT recently reported.

James Vowles knows both drivers very well. Valterri was the No. 2 at Mercedes and Ocon was a Mercedes junior. Above all, Vowles has resumed discussions with these two, just like when Sainz wasn’t considered initially.
Williams’ decision to look beyond Carlos Sainz could trigger a ‘domino effect’ as other teams with vacant seats would huddle up against each other to get the best driver among the three. Considering the recent performances, Sainz would be at the top of the priority list.

Although the doors aren’t completely closed for Sainz, Williams would want the Spaniard to give them some kind of assurance. The team would want someone whom they can rely on for the future and if the Spaniard fails to do so in the upcoming days, things could worsen. Williams wouldn’t want to risk falling behind and losing their preferred candidate. So Sainz needs to resolve the agreements quickly.
Moreover, Haas is prioritizing Esteban Ocon for the next season, while Sauber/Audi is also looking out for the Frenchman and Bottas in case Sainz declines their offer. Earlier in the Spanish GP, Sainz clarified that he was not willing to make any hasty decisions for 2025. But as of now, it’s costing him his future seat.
