The team bosses have also shared their thoughts, but now, even ex-Ferrari head Luigi Mazzola had something to say about the transfer.

Luigi Mazzola was the man behind most of Michael Schumacher’s championships with Ferrari. While Hamilton has been at the center of attention, Mazzola brought the focus to Carlos Sainz and shared his thoughts on the Spanish driver.

Addressing the current drivers, Mazzola said, A driver wants to prove that he is the fastest and best of all and Leclerc will be able to have Lewis Hamilton as a point of comparison.” He spoke about the change in position that Leclerc is in by saying “Leclerc is no longer a talented young man who has yet to express himself.” And that’s when he turned his focus to the Spaniard and said, “Sainz? If I were Sainz I wouldn’t be so depressed.” Mazzola explains, “He is replaced by Lewis Hamilton, not Albon.”

Then Mazzola shared an important piece of advice on stream for Sainz. He said, “If I were Carlos, I would give everything in 2024 to prove that I am faster than Leclerc. With this, Luigi Mazzola breaks down what he thinks should be the next step for Carlos Sainz. In the 2024 season, Carlos has a chance to prove to Ferrari that they made a mistake by letting the better driver go. This will only happen if he out-performs Charles Leclerc in 2024 and continues to do so beyond the season.

Luigi Mazzola on Ferrari’s current state of mind

“We haven’t won in Ferrari for 17 years and Hamilton will bring a much-needed winning mentality.” These words by Mazzola emphasize Ferrari‘s prolonged drought in winning championships, spanning over 17 years. Hamilton joining the team will help motivate everyone to bring in their A game for the 2025 season and the real preparations will start with the upcoming season itself.

Mazzola brought up Verstappen’s incident at the Austrian Grand Prix and said, “For example, I remember Verstappen who in Austria insisted on making the pit stop at the end to also get the additional point. ‘ This is how you keep trained,’ was his ‘joke’ relating to the extra stop.” He explained how the Dutchman is trying to push harder even though he is in the lead, and it is only such an attitude that will help Ferrari bring home the championship.

Explaining how John Elkann will be happy to have two promising drivers in Ferrari, Mazzola said, “Here Hamilton will bring that mentality where everyone will be tense on the violin string and it is one of the effects that Elkann also wanted to unleash by making two exceptional drivers available to the Scuderia.”
