Princess of Asturias Sports Award is one of the most prestigious functions in Spain which was called the Prince of Asturias Awards. What started in 1981, took a change of title in 2014 and ever since then, they have celebrated people for their achievements in their respective fields. Carolina Marín, a badminton player from Huelva, Spain, was awarded the prestigious Princess of Asturias Sports Award and Carlos Sainz Sr. noticed Marín’s achievement.

This is a title that he himself bagged back in 2020. Seeing that the badminton player has come a long way from her first gold in the European junior under 17 championship fifteen years ago, Sainz Sr. decided to tribute her on Twitter.

This is a huge achievement for Marín as getting the Princess of Asturias Sports Award puts her among the ranks of many legendary Spanish athletes. Sainz Sr. decided to take to Twitter to drop a heartwarming congratulatory message for her in support of the Spanish sports scene.

The message was simple with him saying, “Congratulations to @CarolinaMarin for the Princess of Asturias Sports Award 2024!” And he added, “Great example of an athlete! Well deserved and welcome to the club!” [translated by Google]. Proud of their heritage Sainz Sr. did not miss the opportunity to point out the celebration of the Spanish badminton player, showing support for Spain across all sports.

Carlos Sainz Sr has also won the Award back in 2020 and with Marín’s recent felicitation, he welcomed her to the club that includes F1 legends like Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso. This is a huge deal despite her being the the first and only non-Asian, three-time Oympics world champion.

While Marín recently won the accolade for Badminton, it was Carlos Sainz to take the award back in 2020.

The Princess of Asturias Award celebrates not only Sports personnel but people from fields like Arts, Communication, Literature, Concord, Social Sciences and Technical and Scientific Research. Over the years, many names from all over the world are invited to Spain to celebrate their achievements.

In 2020, Carlos Sainz Sr. was awarded the title for his exceptional career as a motorsport driver for over 3 decades. The two-time world champion became the first Spaniard to win the Dakar Rally race in 2010. He was presented the award after the decision was made by a 19 people jury which included, Alejandro Blanco Bravo the the current President of the Spanish Olympic Committee and Alberto Borregán Rodríguez the FC Barcelona forward.

Ever since receiving the award, Sainz Sr. has been following as many sports people as possible, without missing the chance to show support for new winners of the category.
