Carlos Sainz stirred excitement with his recent interview on the NUDE PROJECT YouTube channel. In this candid discussion, the Ferrari driver not only explored his personal life but also offered insights about Formula 1. The interview offered fans a rare glimpse into his thoughts and experiences. Moreover, he also elaborated on the influence of the Netflix show ‘Drive To Survive’ and how it has elevated the fame of the sport.
On the show, Sainz disclosed a significant detail: his partner, Scottish model Rebecca Donaldson, became interested in F1 after watching the series. “I started explaining these things to her, and her mind opened up, and she found it really cool,” Carlos confessed. Sainz attributes the popularity of Formula 1 to Netflix’s Drive To Survive, which provided a massive promotional platform for the sport. Following DTS’s release, F1 saw a remarkable 70% spike in viewership, particularly in the American market. Carlos emphasized that this surge created numerous opportunities for drivers.
“The heads of Dorna recently sold Formula 1 to Liberty, the American investment group that bought Formula 1 in 2015 or 2016. They opened everything up, including YouTube,“ Sainz revealed in the interview. Carlos Sainz also highlighted that the MotoGP championships can be slightly more thrilling than Formula 1. However, he acknowledges that both sports provide unique excitement and challenges. When asked which sport he finds more entertaining to watch, Sainz replied: “I think both are equally entertaining. On average, a MotoGP race tends to be even more entertaining than Formula 1.“ He added that to find F1 entertaining, one must understand it. However, there are a few reasons that Sainz pointed out, which might be holding back the popularity of MotoGP.

Sainz suggested that MotoGP may be lacking in storytelling compared to Formula 1, which received a significant boost from Netflix. Reflecting on his recent attendance at the Spanish MotoGP, Carlos Sainz observed distinct differences between the two sports. “One interesting aspect of Formula 1 for spectators is the intense rivalry, where tension is palpable. In contrast, MotoGP seems to emphasize camaraderie more, although rivalry exists. From an outsider’s perspective, MotoGP appears friendlier, while Formula 1 gives the impression of fierce competition,” he remarked.
Moreover, Sainz admitted that drama is needed in a sport. Previously, professional rivalries were always out in the public; they have created battles, those characters that sometimes don’t exist. And Netflix has taken it upon itself to dramatize and ‘Hollywoodize’ it. Sainz pointed this out, saying, “Netflix has done that for us, and that’s why you have that perception.”
Carlos Sainz’s view on Formula 1 versus MotoGP shows the complexities that require different levels of understanding. His experience teaching his girlfriend about Formula 1 highlighted the strategic depth of the sport. While MotoGP may seem simpler to grasp at first glance, Sainz’s appreciation for both sports demonstrates their unique appeal to fans worldwide.
