Carlos Sainz always flies under the radar even with the best of performances. Despite having a mediocre 2022, Sainz retains his championship ambitions like his teammate Charles Leclerc. Though with a new boss, Frederic Vasseur, taking charge of Ferrari, Sainz may have an internal challenge before taking on the title challenge for 2023.

Frederic Vasseur was Charles Leclerc’s boss when he debuted in F1 at Alfa Romeo in 2018. Thus, the duo knows each other quite well. Besides, Leclerc also worked with the Frenchman when he raced in Formula Junior. So this might become a challenge for Carlos Sainz if Fred Vasseur decides to focus on his teammate more than him.
Although the Spaniard trusts Vasseur and he knows how hard-working and quick he can be to take Ferrari forward. Speaking with some representatives from DAZN at the Estrella Galicia 0.0 factory in Spain, Sainz put forth his thoughts about his new team principal.
As per Marca.com, he said, “It [Ferrari getting Vasseur] is a change that we hope will be for the better, whenever someone new arrives there is extra motivation to want to do well for him and for the team to take another step forward, you have to give him time.” [translated via Google]
Sainz also pointed out that he has known Fred for a while since his Renault days. Meanwhile, he has also spoken to him after Ferrari announced him as the new team boss.

Yet, Sainz would be looking to win over Vasseur’s trust. Because if he does not match Charles Leclerc from the get-go, Vasseur might want to prioritize the Monegasque over him for the championship.
How can Carlos Sainz match Charles Leclerc in 2023?
Carlos Sainz has run close to Leclerc in his 2 years at the Scuderia. But the major issue for Sainz is a rough start to the season as we saw in 2022. So, the primary goal for the Smooth Operator has to be getting the ideal start to the season.
He will want to be on pace with Charles from the first race and not fall behind points-wise. A calculative approach is also needed from Sainz, to not step on his teammate’s toes and maintain the team dynamic too.
Thus, Sainz cannot go clashing with Leclerc, which limits both of their progress in the championship. His major focus will be to avoid DNFs and maximize his results by eliminating his driving errors. A strong start to the season like this will keep him in contention for the championship as much as Leclerc.

Coming to his stronger points, Carlos knows how to build on a good start through the mid-season. The Spaniard can be really strong in the 2nd half of the season, as seen in 2021 when he finished ahead of Charles in the standings.
