“What you guys probably don’t know is that I was having to do a lot of fuel-saving. I was also quite weak in the last corner because I was struggling a bit with the tires towards the end.”

Sainz explains the strategy he opted for at the end of the Hungarian GP

When Carlos Sainz was running at P3, the Spaniard decided not to help his fellow compatriot. He started to pull away from Alonso to create some distance between him and Lewis Hamilton once the latter goes past the two-time world champion, Fernando Alonso.

“We will never know if I took the right choice, but thinking about it at the time, my feeling was to play safe and tried to pull away from Fernando to make sure that I tried to do all the fuel-saving and Lewis would take more -time to catch me,” said Carlos Sainz.

However, Lewis Hamilton only took a few laps to overtake the Ferrari man. Eventually, the Spaniard finished the race just one place behind the podium positions. Although Carlos Sainz later inherited the P3 position from Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel after the latter was disqualified from the race.

The four-time world champion, Sebastian Vettel, secured P2 but was later disqualified from the Hungarian Grand Prix. Vettel failed to ensure a minimum of 1-liter fuel in his Aston Martin AMR21 at the end of the race. As a result, the stewards eliminated Vettel from the race as they could only extract 0.3 liters of fuel.
