Remember when Fernando Alonso said ‘Lance is my hero’? Alonso seems to be Stroll’s No 1 supporter and sees something in him that we’ve not seen yet. However, that doesn’t take away from the disappointing year that he’s been having. As the disappointments pile on, Lawrence Stroll is faced with the brutal reality of Lance Stroll. What is Lawrence Stroll going to do about it?

Lance Stroll has been the talk of the town for a couple of races now and not for a reason he would like. Fernando Alonso has been hustling the Aston Martin and finishing in the Top 3 consistently. Stroll, on the other hand, struggles to even score points in a car that is arguably the second fastest one. Now that Aston Martin has the car to finish constructors in the Top 3, many questions about whether Stroll is the right fit for the team are popping up. Does he have what it takes?

Eddie Jordan asked a similar question to David Coulthard. Jordan asked, “What do you say to the sponsors who came to see you and asked you if Lance can do the work so that the team can be champion?” Coulthard explained how Lance was not a slow driver by any means. The Canadian has proved himself and won in the junior categories. Also, luck hasn’t been on his side this year.

However, one cannot neglect the work Alonso is doing in the Aston Martin as Coulthard shoves the reality down Lawrence Stroll’s throat. According to Motorsport.Nextgen-Auto, David Coulthard said, “But is it a surprise in one of the most difficult transition qualification sessions you have seen this year, and also in Monaco, that a brilliant young talent and an older brilliant talent (Verstappen and Alonso, ndr) find their way to the front line? So there is a time when we can’t continue to make excuses.”

The fact that Stroll has won in the junior categories coupled with the glimpse of his talent that was showcased when he took the pole in wet conditions and finished in the points with broken wrists means a great driver is in there somewhere. Fernando Alonso believes in Stroll and intends to help him. 

Fernando Alonso believes that Lance Stroll ‘is showing the speed in the car’ 

Ever since joining the Aston Martin team, Fernando Alonso only had praise for his teammate. The Spaniard called the Canadian his Hero after he finished in points at Bahrain after a major accident. Alonso even advises that Lance Stroll is championship-winning material and that he will help groom him as long as he’s on the team. The 41-year-old explained that Stroll has the speed and just needs to be consistent with his results. 

According to Formula1.com, Lance Stroll said, “I think Lance is showing the speed in the car, the commitment. We saw at the beginning of the year as well, racing with a broken hand and things like that; you only see [this] when you really have passion for something that you’re doing.” Explaining what Stroll needed to do, he said, “I think, for him, the most important thing now is to get the consistency, weekend after weekend… That consistency is going to be the next step in his career.”
