Let’s be honest here for a moment. Logan Sargeant’s debut season was not all that impressive. Williams, as a team, was single-handedly carried by Alex Albon, with Sargeant scoring only one point in the whole season. Add that to the myriad of mistakes the American made throughout the year, and people rightly wonder if Sargeant will be in Formula 1 in 2024.
That being said, if we dig a little deeper into the picture, a lot of things fall into place. For instance, Williams Team Principal James Vowles reiterated that 2023 was a premature promotion for Sargeant. This would not be the year he’d be judged for his performances, but rather the year he spends attempting to learn the car. And according to the former Mercedes strategy director, he has been doing that incredibly well. While Williams has attempted to remain tight-lipped about Sargeant’s seat in 2024, the Grove-based constructor might have accidentally confirmed it after the chequered flag in Abu Dhabi.

Before getting into whether Logan Sargeant will be on the grid in 2024, it’s important to know why his seat is in question. It’s no secret that Williams isn’t the most well-funded team on the grid. That, along with the budget cap, hasn’t worked in favor of Williams, especially considering Logan Sargeant won the Destructors’ Championship in 2023. As the name suggests, it’s a list of the cost of damages incurred by each driver in a season. With crashes in the Dutch, Japanese, Singapore, Miami, Belgian, and Spanish GPs, he’s cost Williams a massive $4.3 million.
In fact, the Dorilton Capital-backed team has had to compromise on 2024 development to build some spare parts for the American driver. Add this to the fact that he’s failed to set a time in qualifying multiple times due to crashes and track limit violations. It wouldn’t be a wild conjecture to believe Williams’ patience is running thin. Despite the huge question mark over Sargeant’s future, it might’ve just been confirmed at the Yas Marina Circuit. After the race, Gaetan Jego, Sargeant’s race engineer, pretty much gave away the plot.
Here’s the conversation between Sargent and his engineer. Jego said, “P16, and we are seventh in the championship. I think that was a good race. Thank you for this year, it was a pleasure to be alongside you this year.” Sargeant replied, “Thank you guys very much. Obviously, we’ve had our ups and downs, but I really feel there’s momentum building and just getting stronger and stronger. Couldn’t have chosen a better group of people to spend it with. And yeah, I just hope we can continue it. Thank you guys.” That’s where Jego let the cat slip out of the bag. He responded, “Thank you, Logan. Looking forward to next year, buddy.”
Well, it looks like Logan Sargeant could just stick around for another year. As speculations ran amuck after this radio communication, James Vowles begged to differ. While Sargeant has improved a lot this season, things are still not finalized.

Speaking to the media after the Abu Dhabi GP, Vowles backtracked Jego’s words. “I’m afraid you’re getting ahead of yourself. But whatever happens, Logan has been in our academy for many, many years. He will always remain a part of our academy.” While this non-committal statement left Sargeant fans a bit worried, they have a realistic deadline to face now. Vowles revealed that a decision will be made within a few weeks. He and the team just need to look at the season as a whole to make the right decision for both Logan and Williams.
“I just want to check through a full season of data one more time and look at the progress, look at mistakes, look the outliers, look for growth, and just make sure we’re on the right track,” explained Vowles, as reported by The Independent. If it is not Logan Sargeant, one has to start wondering who the other drivers in contention for the seat are. Mick Schumacher is set to race in the World Endurance Championships. For now, Felipe Drugovich is the only driver with a rumored link to the second seat.
