Fans bid Sebastian Vettel a teary-eyed goodbye when he retired at the end of the 2022 season. While he had his best years with Red Bull, he kept striving to excel when he joined Ferrari. However, his two-year stint with Aston Martin did not go as per plan, and eventually, he retired.
Sebastian Vettel reveals his superstitious ritual
Sebastian Vettel switched to Red Bull in 2019 and tasted instant success. However, his superstitious ritual started a year back during his time at Toro Rosso. Vettel won his first race in 2008 in Monza after securing a pole position. He narrated a ritual that started after the qualifying in Monza in an interview with Ted Kravitz for Sky Sports.
In the 2018 interview, he told, “I’m not superstitious, but it dates back from Monza where, can you imagine, winning your first Grand Prix. I already said it on Saturday I sort of buried the underwear, the suit, the shoes, everything because that’s a pole position in Formula 1. Then on Sunday it happened again.” He said this, explaining his superstition of not reusing the helmet which he has won with.
Most F1 drivers auction their race-winning helmets for a whopping sum of money. Sebastian, however, did not do that and now we know why he doesn’t. While he may maintain he is not superstitious, his earlier interviews reveal otherwise.
What other superstitions did Vettel follow?
Sebastian Vettel appeared for a virtual autograph session with his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc in 2020. One fan during the session asked the duo if there was a superstition they followed before the race. While Seb told he did not really have a pre-race ritual now, there were a few he did earlier in his career.
Vettel revealed, “I only get into the car from the left side. I usually have two coins, like one coin in each shoe for the race.“

“It’s not like I imagine that I have superpowers when they are with me.”
Seb also talked about a crazy superstition he had that he realized was too much. “At some point, I got really superstitious and even when there was a cat crossing, I took a detour. But then it got out of hand so I stopped it.”
