Lewis Hamilton is having the worst start of the season ever since the 25-point system was introduced in 2010. This is being noticed by everyone as although he shares the same car as George Russell, the world champion ends up finishing behind his teammate. Not only is this being picked up by everyone, but many have also started to talk about it.
One figure who spoke his mind on this is former Jordan, and Jaguar engineer, Gary Anderson. After seeing Lewis Hamilton’s performance in Bahrain and Jeddah, he shared what he thought was the problem here.
Why is Lewis Hamilton so slow in 2024?

According to Formula Passion, Gary Anderson told The Telegraph, “After the race Hamilton said that big changes needed to be made to the car. He said that other teams around them still have different concepts. But Hamilton is only talking about what you can see.”
He continued, “The critical part of these cars is the floor and Hamilton doesn’t know what the other teams are doing. What you see is not necessarily what makes the machine work.” Stating that taking inspiration from another team will not help fix the flaws in their car.
“It seems that he believes that if Mercedes makes its car look like a Red Bull, it will go as fast as a Red Bull, but that’s not the case. The W15 needs a lot more work than the visual concept, but the concern is that they still haven’t figured out what a ground effect car needs,” concluded Anderson.
With this, it’s clear that the issue lies within the W15, but Lewis Hamilton is having a harder time adjusting to the car compared to George Russell. While rumors are stating that Hamilton has been driving on an experimental setup, nothing can be confirmed as of now. But with this being his last year in Mercedes, the team may be trying to collect as much data as possible from him, using different setups.
Mercedes’ plans stopped aligning with Lewis Hamilton
When Red Bull came into power, it was like a switch went off in Mercedes and their car designs started getting worse with time. The team that has created the cars that consistently brought home 8 consecutive constructors titles from 2014 to 2021, just stopped being able to give the drivers a competitive car.

Lewis Hamilton is one of the finest drivers the sport has ever seen and initially, the team used to craft the car with his opinion having a high priority. But as of recent years, the cars have not been what the world champion wanted and this led to the steady decline of both Mercedes and Hamilton.
With what John Elkann envisioned for Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, the driver was much happier in that setting. A heavy offer from Ferrari was something that helped influence Hamilton’s mind, and now we expect to see him in all red from next year.
