McLaren are making their Formula E debut! The British unit which also participates in F1, IndyCar, Extreme E, and esports will see a new beginning.

As McLaren wishes to extend its global audience through diversity, this move doesn’t shock many. In fact, the team even participated in Extreme E after signing an optional contract in 2021. Logically, this very signing facilitated their move to Formula E.

Mercedes are now part of the McLaren family

Formula E is a great platform for sustainability through an electric-powered future. The cars that compete in wheel-to-wheel combat provide viewers with a very close racing experience. Moreover, these cars, powered and run by electricity, provide a great platform to test technological advancements. This series has the vision to create a low-carbon future that won’t be detrimental to the environment.

McLaren will acquire the reigning champion Mercedes-EQ Formula E team. We expect the move to be complete later this year, as the Silver Arrows will become a part of the McLaren family. CEO Zak Brown sounded convinced and happy as he revealed, “McLaren Racing always seeks to compete against the best and on the leading edge of technology, providing our fans, partners, and people with new ways to be excited, entertained, and inspired. Formula E, like all our racing series, fulfils all those criteria.”

Moreover, the Team Principal of the current Mercedes team, Ian James, will ensure a smooth transition. He will also continue to lead the team until further notice. Further, announcements regarding new drivers, partners, etc. will make news in due course. However, James was happy about the acquisition. Notably, the mentor believes Mercedes has achieved its objectives of winning and progressing.

Formula 1 changing to suit the environment

The two British teams are not collaborating for the first time. In Formula 1, too, the Woking unit uses Mercedes power units and keeps close contact with the F1 giants. These teams look forward to a similar future and understandably share similar interests. Even F1 is undergoing progressive changes that facilitate better racing.
