In a surprising turn of events at the F1 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, Lando Norris, McLaren‘s star driver, was served a five-second penalty for “unsportsmanlike conduct”, a decision that baffled many, including Norris himself. The officials penalized Norris for slowing down to create a gap between himself and his teammate Oscar Piastri during a pit stop, a strategy he believed to be common in the sport. The penalty demoted Norris’s P9 finish to P13, leaving him without any points from the race. But amidst the misery, he found a good reason to celebrate.

The FIA Stewards believed Norris slowed down excessively, thereby delaying the cars behind him. Norris countered, stating that it was common practice to maintain a gap to keep the tire temperature optimal, and he didn’t understand why he was penalized for such an action. Despite his confusion and disappointment, Norris didn’t let the penalty cast a shadow over his overall performance.

Despite this setback, Norris displayed an impressive drive, executing numerous overtakes throughout the race. Even though Alpine’s Esteban Ocon constantly hounded him during the closing stages, Norris was thrilled with his performance. “It was my best race of the year I would say,” Norris agreed.

“One of my first overtakes of the year today. It was a good race. All my overtakes were in the hairpin, I was really confident on the brakes.” He continued saying, “The pace was good. I wouldn’t say it was amazing, but good enough to hold on to the Alfa and the Alpine and have a chance to at least race them.”

Despite the setback, Norris’s impressive performance provided a silver lining to an otherwise disappointing race for McLaren. With his ability to find joy in the race and focus on his achievements rather than the penalty, Norris demonstrated an important aspect of professional racing – the ability to keep pushing forward despite challenges.
