“Barbie or Oppenheimer?”: As Greta Gerwig Venture Reaches $1 Billion Mark at Box Office, F1 Star’s Allegiance Stands Questioned

Formula 1’s summer break can often be a lonely affair for F1 fans. While the drivers really look forward to a month-long break to recharge their batteries, the fans on the other hand feel purposeless without a race weekend to look forward to. Thankfully, the world of Hollywood has emerged as a worthy messiah in 2023 to add a bit of spice to what would otherwise be a dull month of August in the world of F1!

Two blockbuster films, ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’, were released worldwide on the 21st of July, 2023. While the two films arguably cater to polar opposite themes and moods, it is no doubt that both films have captured the attention and imagination of the worldwide populace including F1 fans. But a debate is now raging within the racing fandom and it’s all down to one internet-thrashing post.

It’s not like a $1,000,000,000 venture, like Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ needs any additional validation. However, with another blockbuster in the shape of Cillian Murphy-led Oppenheimer in direct competition, a fanciful debate has gripped Instagram courtesy of a French F1 star.

F1 driver Esteban Ocon ignites Barbie v. Oppenheimer debate on social media

The Alpine star came onto his Instagram account to share a few recent photos and memories with his fans. However, one picture that showed the Frenchman enjoying himself all alone in a movie theatre caused a wildfire to emerge in the comments section.

It all started when one fan commented, “Estie bestie which movie did you saw ? Barbie or Oppenheimer?”

Another fan started speculating when they wrote, “team barbie or team oppenheimer” As another seemingly had an inside line on Ocon’s cinema plans! They commented, “I know for a fact that he saw the Barbie movie.”

A full-fledged debate then raged as the fans speculated Ocon’s true loyalties. Half his fan base was team Barbie as the others rooted the epic Oppenheimer.
