F1’s inclusivity has been questioned as controversy from the Bahrain GP circuit surfaces surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community. According to German newspaper Bild as reported by FormulaPassion, staff at the Sakhir circuit informed the F1 teams against showing support for the rainbow flag on their clothing or accessories upon entering the facility. A miscommunication “short-circuit” was deemed the reason for the inappropriate ban being announced and the organizers were quick to address the issue. This caused an uproar within the F1 community as the sport has been fighting towards inclusivity for everyone.
To this, the Bahrain Circuit owner and F1 put out a statement saying, “The organization of the Bahrain GP welcomes everyone and is against any form of discrimination.” The spokesperson stated that “appropriate action” will take place to correct the wrongdoing of the staff. The two organizations also said, “It was an isolated incident that violated the organizational policies of F1 and Bahrain.”
The reason that things got so escalated is that such incidents have occurred in the past, highlighting ongoing tensions in regions with differing stances on civil rights issues. Formula 1 has increasingly positioned itself as an advocate for diversity and inclusion, but clashes with local policies or sentiments can create challenges.

The Bahrain GP serves as the opening race for the 2024 Formula 1 season, held at the Sakhir circuit. The event coincides with the beginning of Ramadan, prompting a change in race scheduling to respect the religious observance. That being said, the first two races of the season will take place on a Saturday instead of a Sunday, giving this year an interesting start for F1 fans.
Lewis Hamilton’s inclusion approach
When it comes to embracing minorities in Formula One, no one does it quite like Lewis Hamilton. The Briton has been pushing forward inclusivity since the beginning of his career. Being the first and only black racer in Formula One, he has always pushed diversity forward and that does not only stop at race.
The Billion Dollar Man has earned the moniker not only for his financial wealth but also for his empathy. At 39 years of age, he is pushing inclusivity even for people with pride to make Formula 1 a sport that respects all. One of the best displays of his dedication has to be his project, Mission 44. With this initiative, he works on pushing people with diverse backgrounds, mindsets, and preferences into a non-discriminatory future.
