Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso are arguably two of the most talented F1 drivers to have ever graced the tarmac. With a combined total of 3 championships, 53 wins, and 208 podiums, these records will put most F1 records to shame. A former Ferrari boss was recently asked to have his pick between the two. Let’s see who he chose and what was the reason behind it.

People always talk and argue about who the GOAT of F1 is. Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen are some of the names that pop up during the GOAT debate. However, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen are hardly brought up in such conversations just because their stats don’t come close to the aforementioned names. Just being excluded from these conversations doesn’t take away the talent that the Iceman and Nando have.

Peter Windsor in his recent YouTube video was asked who was the quicker driver between Raikkonen and Alonso at their absolute peak. Windsor explained how most people would answer that a combination of Iceman’s one-lap pace and Alonso’s ability to drive with the variables and still get a decent result would make the perfect driver. However, since the question was quicker, Windsor chose Raikkonen.

According to Peter Windsor’s YouTube video, he said, “You say the fastest racing driver out of those two, I would say Kimi Raikkonen. You say a driver that would over a full race season in a car that 50% of the time has front or rear wing damage or sidepod damage, Fernando Alonso. I don’t know. You’ve asked the question quicker so I would say Kimi.”

We understand Windsor’s point of view. It is difficult to pick between Alonso and Raikkonen. Both are so different in how they approach a weekend. Raikkonen is known as a man of few words, whereas Alonso is a man of many. Yet there was one season where Raikkonen and Alonso went head to head in similar machinery. What was the outcome?

Despite making their debut in the same year, 2001, it would only be 2014 when the two would race each other as teammates. The duo battled for the championship in 2005 and 2007 with either one coming out on top once. Nonetheless, 2014 saw Raikkonen join Ferrari with Alonso as his teammate. Alonso left Raikkonen in the mud as the Spaniard scored 161 points and finished 6th compared to Raikkonen’s 55 points and 12th place finish.

When asked about his deficit to Alonso during the 2014 season in an episode of Beyond the Grid podcast, Raikkonen said “I think he’s always been very good. As a teammate, I’m kind of certain that there was something odd happening, like between us. For sure, I didn’t have a very good year, for many reasons. I didn’t do that well, but we all know he’s fast every weekend.”
