Fernando Alonso is arguably one of the most talented and skilled F1 drivers on the grid. His performance at the Dutch GP just shows that the Spaniard has still got it. However, F1 isn’t that simple. The fastest and best drivers are sometimes not the ones winning races and titles. It’s a team sport. Nonetheless, Lawrence Stroll’s leadership is being put to the test as a $30 million hurdle blocks Fernando Alonso from executing his ‘El Plan’. What is the hurdle?

As we mentioned, F1 isn’t just about the driver but the whole team. It’s how everyone functions as a whole. Mind games are a major part of F1. Putting pressure on the other team, making them think, and not being predictable, is all a part of this. Ferrari overtook Aston Martin for 3rd in the constructors after the Italian GP. One major difference between Aston Martin and the big three is the second driver.

Lance Stroll hasn’t been able to contribute as much as Alonso and one only wonders if the Canadian is hindering the team’s progress. Questions are already being raised about Stroll. It’s up to Lawrence Stroll to decide whether he wants to keep his son in F1 or put a capable, strong teammate alongside Alonso, a test of Lawrence Stroll’s leadership if we say so.

According to the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Nico Rosberg said, “The problem is, it’s not from the one year, it’s the father-son relationship also. That’s the challenge. That’s what matters here then, eventually. It’s a very difficult one. But also, if I mean Aston was second in the constructors I think that’s $30,000,000 or more in revenue from the TV money share. Something like that if I had to guess now, from second to fourth in the constructors championship. So there’s a lot of money at stake as well.”

While Alonso is doing his part to get 2nd in the constructors, Lance Stroll isn’t doing as much. Hence, the $30 Million, the difference between 2nd and 4th in constructors, is being regarded as the hurdle for Fernando Alonso’s El Plan. While El Plan may have multiple goals, the main one is for Alonso to get his 3rd championship and to get Aston Martin to the top. Only once Alonso has a competitive teammate, will he be able to challenge for the title with a rear gunner to protect him.

Nonetheless, Fernando Alonso knows who owns the team. Hence isn’t making or forcing any issue about it. In fact, the Spaniard is believed to be mentoring the Canadian and also advised what Stroll needs to do to improve his performance.

The story isn’t all bad for Lance Stroll. He isn’t the best driver on the grid but is far from being a bad one. The Canadian has shown glimpses of his talent and determination. Earlier this year, when he scored points with broken wrists, is one such example. Alonso advised how Stroll should focus on consistency and target finishing in the Top 5 in every race.

According to Formula1.com, Fernando Alonso said, “I think, for him, the most important thing now is to get the consistency, weekend after weekend… That consistency is going to be the next step in his career, to be constantly fighting for the top five and then at the end of the year, you see the amount of points that you gain when you get all the weekends right.”
