Every passing second brings us new developments from the world of F1, on or off the track. Such has been the nature of the sport since the turn of the year. Today, we want to talk about a scenario that has been brewing for quite some time thanks to the unexpected announcement by Mercedes man Lewis Hamilton. The Brit’s decision sent the entire sport and the driver’s market into a frenzy, and in this piece, we want to talk about one of the possible repercussions: Fernando Alonso to Mercedes. The Spaniard has been linked with the Brackley outfit for weeks. However, Aston Martin is ready to put all such rumors to bed.

Alonso to Mercedes became a widely discussed topic thanks to multiple reports and one public sighting. However, after the initial flame, the rumor went on the back burner as the focus shifted to racing. However, as soon as we’ve gotten a break, the Aston Martin TP Mike Krack was quick to discuss Alonso’s future and revealed they will be starting the contract extension talks soon.

“The extra Fernando brings to the team is exemplary. I think it’s no secret that we want to continue working with him. It is important to offer him a quick package so that he believes in this project and in this team. We’ll be discussing this in the coming weeks,” said Krack.

Going by Aston Martin’s AMR24’s current state, the Spaniard has not gotten enough reason to sign an extension. However, if the Silverstone-based outfit can introduce a package that makes him competitive, he might reconsider. If that doesn’t happen, Alonso’s future can be shaped in two ways.

What will Fernando Alonso do–continue, or hang up his helmet?

The 2024 season boasts the most expansive calendar the circus has ever seen. We’re not sure how exhausting the 24-race calendar will feel to the drivers. However, if it gets out of hand, leaving the sport is not out of the question. This is the concern of many Aston Martin entities as well. However, if it’s manageable, the Spaniard will continue racing. Where? That remains to be seen, but based on his admission, Alonso will continue racing.

Alonso revealed, “I will look at what 24 races feel like next year. When I feel like I’m no longer performing the performance I expect from me, I’m the first to raise my hand. The moment has not yet come.”

So Alonso’s future depends on how he and his body reacts to the demanding record calendar. Let’s hope for the sport’s sake, he continues, otherwise, the sport will be left devoid of a true entertainer on and off the track.
