The silly season in Formula One is fully underway. Most of the drivers had already signed contract extensions with their teams before the beginning of the silly season. It looked like Alfa Romeo and Williams were the only teams that had seats vacant. But it looks like Aston Martin might join in on the action.
Aston Martin team principal Otmar Szafnauer stated that although the team is happy with Sebastian Vettel, some reports suggested the team had offered the seat to Fernando Alonso. However, now Aston Martin has poured cold water on such suggestions.

We like Sebastian Vettel and he likes us: Aston Martin team boss
As reported by Auto Und Motor Sport, the American mentioned the team is very keen to extend Vettel’s contract. But some sources had mentioned that Lawrence Stroll had offered Seb’s seat to Fernando Alonso for the 2022 season. Alonso declined the offer and stayed with Alpine.
“Lawrence Stroll did not offer a drive to Fernando Alonso, as has been reported in some media. Lawrence had lunch with [Alonso’s manager] Flavio Briatore in Sardinia during the summer break.
He and Flavio are friends. They have lunch together in Sardinia many times over many years. It was a social occasion, nothing more.” said Aston Martin team personnel denying Stroll offering a contract to Alonso.
“We have a one-plus-one contract. It stipulates certain dates that we have to decide on. The deadline has not yet been reached,” said Szafnauer on Vettel’s contract.
“There is a time window in which we want to sit down. That is not far away. We like Sebastian and he likes us. Now we have to talk about how it should go next year.” said Otmar.
