The Max Verstappen-Sergio Perez controversy in Brazil reignited doubts about Perez’s crash during qualifying in Monaco. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said he won’t shy away from initiating an investigation into the matter. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, however, feels Red Bull has had enough in the last few weeks.

The Red Bull management was catching its breath after the whole cost cap saga when Brazil happened. To steal points away from Charles Leclerc in the final stages of the race, strategists told Max Verstappen to overtake his teammate and chase the Monegasque. They did this after the team realized Perez could not have done that himself, given he was on older tires.

The team also ordered Max Verstappen to concede the position in case he failed to overtake Fernando Alonso. Alonso was behind Charles Leclerc. Not only did Verstappen fail to overtake Alonso, but he also defied the team’s orders to let his teammate pass. An angry cryptic radio message from the Dutch following the chequered flag made fans wonder if his actions were in response to Sergio Perez’s crash in qualifying in Monaco.
Many called for Mercedes and other rival teams to lodge a formal complaint into Perez’s incident. Toto Wolff however is not in favor of it. As per F1 journalist Chris Medland, Toto said, “We’ve had enough PR crises over the last few weeks around that team and we don’t need another one.”
If rumors are to be believed, Perez did not just crash in Monaco on purpose but also admitted to it to Christian Horner and Helmut Marko. FIA hasn’t ruled out an investigation into the matter.

Speaking with the press, Sulayem said, “I’m not shy or afraid of conducting or going into it if there is an issue. I will not hide.”
“I will be even raising my hand and saying [if] there is an issue with the FIA. Otherwise, if I cannot do this, you will never improve and never evolve. That I can guarantee.”
