Innovation is the name of the game and Formula 1 is the best at it. F1 is the most advanced motor sporting competition there is. However, aside from the innovation in cars, F1 took an innovative approach with the format as well in 2021. British world champion Lewis Hamilton is all for it with a slight tweak.

The format in question is the sprint races. The fairly new format introduced in 2021 offers fans the excitement of racing for a starting grid position ahead of the race. However, not all drivers are for it, including Max Verstappen. Drivers who are for it, like Hamilton, want to see some tweaks made in the format.

As per RaceFans, Hamilton expressed the need for slight tweak in sprint races to increase the excitement factor. “I think we have to be very selective of where we have the sprint races,” said the Mercedes man.

“You can look at the season and see where all the overtakes are and you can put the sprint races in those places. — Put them in places like Brazil, which does create a lot of opportunity. Or somewhere like Baku.”

Making sprint races more exciting is Hamilton’s thought. That’s something he did in Interlagos where he started at the back of the grid and rose to finish fifth. The FIA should surely look into this before announcing the 2023 sprint race venues.

However, Hamilton’s thought is completely in disagreement with Max Verstappen’s.

Max Verstappen has a different stand on sprint races compared to Lewis Hamilton

Max Verstappen outrightly expressed “I don’t like it” while discussing the sprint racing format. Despite his success in the sprint races, the Dutchman feels the risk-to-reward ratio of a sprint race is not balanced.

“For me, the weekend format I don’t really enjoy. All the time when I do these races, it’s about, ‘oh, let’s not have damage, just make sure that you stay in the top three’,” Verstappen explained.

“For me, that’s not really a race,” said the Red Bull man.
