Will we ever stop talking about Lewis Hamilton missing out on his chance to get an eighth title in Abu Dhabi 2021? I guess not. There isn’t a day that goes by when the Hollywood-esque last-lap showdown at Yas Marina is not mentioned by someone from the F1 community. And more often than not, it is the losing side. Mercedes Boss Toto Wolff has in a recent interview taken a dig at the man who was his last hope.

Jean Todt, who was alongside Michael Schumacher when the man began writing history in scarlet-colored ink, became the FIA boss in 2009 and remained at the helm till the conclusion of the most controversial title race of our times. FIA, who had self-admittedly stated that the last lap shoot-out cal was a “Human error” by Michael Masi, was headed by Michelle Yeoh’s husband. While Toto Wolff expected him to right the wrong by intervening, the man was at his country house.

As quoted by Telegraaf.NL, Toto Wolff said, “That season ended catastrophically for us. But in the end it was because of one person,” he refers to the later dismissed race director Michael Masi. It is as simple as that, there is no other conspiracy theory. Would I have wished then FIA President Jean Todt had been involved, rather than him busy filming a documentary? Yes, that’s true. Then maybe he could have told the stewards to look closely at the regulations. I don’t know if it changed anything. One person decided this. I’m at peace with it now.”

Toto Wolff is right, as a couple of weeks ago, the ex-FIA supremo did admit to getting a call from both parties.

“I didn’t do anything,” admits Jean Todt over Lewis Hamilton-Max Verstappen controversy

Todt himself had confirmed many things that Toto had just now revealed. The ex-boss stated he was not the one to interfere and make such calls. A while ago fans had called him out for not wanting Lewis to surpass Michael Schumacher’s record, he says it was the impartial marshals’ duty.

“I didn’t do anything,” said Jean Todt. Further comparing his role at the time to that of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, he expanded, “It’s not the role of the president of the FIA. Referees must be autonomous, have you ever heard Infantino say, ‘Here there was a penalty, but not here?”

He further added, “In the documentary, it can be seen that I am watching that race in the country house together with the crew. They call me, Horner and Wolff, and I answer to them, ‘I can’t interfere, it’s the responsibility of the marshals and the race director’.”
