While Daniel Ricciardo was driving for Red Bull in 2018, there was a moment when the flamboyant Honey Badger punched a wall followed by a retirement in Austin, Texas. This was, however, not an isolated incident. The Perth-based driver admitted that he put parts of his body through the wall and doors because of the failures he was going through that season.
We are familiar with the iconic COTA incident. However, we might have overlooked two other incidents that occurred in Melbourne and Bahrain. After earning a three-place penalty for failing to slow down during a red flag during free practice, Ricciardo started from eighth on the grid and finished fourth in the Australian Grand Prix. Whereas in Bahrain his car had electrical issues.
In an interview with Max Verstappen for Red Bull’s On The Sofa, Daniel Ricciardo was seen discussing the reasons behind his disappointments. He said, “It all started in Melbourne, before the season even started. In practice, I got the penalty for not slowing enough for that red flag so that started with putting my elbows through the door of my room.”
“A week later I tried to channel that energy into Bahrain and my race finished after one lap… so I put my knee through the door in that one and it kind of spiraled,” he added.
And finally, he explained why he put his fist through the wall at Austin by saying, “And there was the fist [through the wall] in Austin, and Austin was the worst one. Austin, I don’t know why, I just reached a real low.”
