Through time, Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff have reached some new heights together in F1. So it is only natural that the two share a great bond. The same is quite evident when they are seen defending one another every time someone tries to point the figure at the Silver Arrows camp. Wolff has frequently been seen standing by his star driver, and something similar happened in 2017 when the British driver was falsely accused by the media.

In 2017, Lewis Hamilton went through one of his career’s most challenging seasons. The Englishman slipped 20 points behind four-time champion Sebastian Vettel after finishing second to the German driver in Austria. And before his home race, Lewis Hamilton also missed an F1 live event as he wanted to rest before Silverstone. This, and a few other events, led the media to speculate that there was a rift within the Silver Arrows.
As per reports, Toto Wolff took issue with such claims. The head of the Silver Arrows squad slammed the media saying, “The dynamics are great. There were rubbish stories that there were some relationship problems between Lewis and the team and Lewis and myself.”
“I give him freedom to organize his days in the way he wants. If he feels being away from Formula 1 environment, being with his friends, helps him extract performance then so be it.”
Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have almost become synonymous now, and despite the seven-time champion’s disappointing season this year, it appears the German manufacturers are prepared to extend the Briton’s contract.

Hamilton’s current contract is set to expire at the end of next year, but according to Wolff, “It’s 100% his seat.” When questioned about discussions with Hamilton concerning a contract renewal, the Austrian said, “We want to definitely finish the season and then find some quiet time over the winter like we have done last time around.”
Finally, Wolff talked about Hamilton’s role in the team and said “He’s much more than a driver to us now. Although we are not talking about a career end, it’s also important to speak about his role as an ambassador for Mercedes and the many sponsors we have and the implication he can have in our wider universe.”
