The talks regarding an addition to the existing F1 teams have been around for a long time now. However, the chances for this are highly unlikely as the F1 chief points out the resistances that are in place to prevent the new entry.

Allowing a new team will not only be an issue for the existing teams as it will dilute their values but also got to be a problem for the paddocks. Since most of the tracks are equipped to have ten operational teams, adding one more might be problematic.

In a report published by The Race, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali stated, “It’s a matter of understanding not only the ones that have a bigger or louder voice, there will be others – Andretti was quite vocal about his request, but there are others that are saying in a different way,”

Mario I know him very very well since a long time – he’s trying to present his idea in a way that he thought is the right way to do, but I believe there is a governance in place, and the decision has to follow the protocol that is in place. Mario is very vocal, Michael too, and I spoke with them quite often.” further asserted the F1 chief.

Who are Mario and Michael Andretti and why are they interested in the F1 team?

Mario Andretti is one of the most renowned American professional racing drivers. Andretti Sr. is a name involved in motorsports for a long, long time. Now, his son Michael Andretti, has also followed in his father’s footsteps and has grown an active interest in motorsports.

The Andretti family already has a team that competes in IndyCar, Indy Lights, Indy Pro 2000, and Formula E under the name of Andretti Autosport. The family also has shares in the Australian Supercars Championship touring car team, Walkinshaw Andretti United. Also, a stake in the Extreme E team, Andretti United.

Given the superior rise of Formula 1 in the United States of America, the Andretti family has grown enough interest to have an F1 team as well. If possible, that team could be the second American team in F1 after Haas.

Moreover, it looks like paying $200 million fees to be to field an F1 team, might not be enough for the Andretti family. As the F1 boss thinks gaining an entry for the Andretti family depends if they can take over an existing team, it’ll be interesting to see if they can acquire one.
