The 2021 season was the epitome of rivalry between the two teams. The Mercedes Vs Red Bull saga kept everyone on the edge of their seats until the very end. However, thanks to the 2022 regulations, that rivalry subsided as quickly as it rose. Red Bull now driving its own league has one hand on the championship already in 2023 as well. Although, many believe Red Bull‘s dreamland will come crashing down as time passes as the Austrian team will be screwed over. Amidst such accusations, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff reiterated the importance of sustainable success with integrity in his latest interview.

Wolff appeared on BBC’s Desert Island Discs podcast to talk about various aspects of his life. One of the biggest aspects of his life is his association with Formula 1 and Mercedes. So while discussing his eight championships, a question, that many repeat winners are asked, was posed to Wolff. The Austrian boss gave an honest reply but also pointed out his approach.

“Does every one of those victories taste as sweet?” Wolff replied, “No, it doesn’t! That is the reason why sports teams generally don’t win many championships in a row.”

“Therefore you need to understand that and accept and acknowledge that people get used to it. There is always a risk of seeing results as normal, complacency that can kick in, or simply lack of motivation and energy. It’s normal and it’s good. But if you’re able to set those objectives, overcome negative spells, like we’re having at the moment, and reinvent the team without throwing overboard what’s good, you can create something that is sustainably successful. That is my target!”, Toto concluded.

Le Mans winner Richard Bradley explained his beliefs with a pattern he has been noticing in the premier class. After Mercedes’ eight-year-long dominance, the regulations made them helpless. Even though the boss Christian Horner might sympathize with Mercedes, the regulations worked in Red Bull’s favor. In fact, thanks to their current position in the championship table, work on the 2024 challenge might already be underway at Milton Keynes. This is exactly why Bradley believes, the 2026 regulations won’t be too kind for Red Bull.

“The way of FOM and the FIA, they always design rule cycles specifically to screw the team that’s leading at the time, because they will literally want to put that team down,” he explained on the On Track GP podcast. “You can tell that they’re going to target Red Bull.”
