There were two similar position swap requests made during the Brazilian Grand Prix. We are all aware of the one made for Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, which was controversially denied by Max Verstappen. Further up the pecking order, Charles Leclerc made a similar request. However, there was a major difference in the request made in the Ferrari camp.
The first major difference was at Red Bull Perez gave up his position to Verstappen earlier, which wasn’t returned to him. In the request Leclerc made, he was asking his teammate to give up his hard-fought P3. However, the second major difference in both the teams’ radio conversations was revealed by Sainz in the post-race presser.

According to Sainz, Ferrari did not communicate Leclerc’s request for the position swap to the Spaniard.
“Yeah, got to know this at the end of the race, because to me on the radio, nothing came from my engineer or the team,” Sainz revealed to the media after the race.
The seemingly unaware Ferrari pilot had nothing to add to this fresh information. “I just got to know this half an hour ago when I jumped out of the car. So I have nothing to comment,” he concluded.
The Ferrari pit wall made an executive decision to not communicate Leclerc’s request during the race to Sainz. Some would see this as an excellent strategic move to maintain harmony between the drivers, something Red Bull failed to do.
However, this situation put both Leclerc and Perez on the same points, fighting for the second spot. The Italian outfit will also fight for the same position in the constructors’ standings against Mercedes. How will Ferrari try and get P2 in the WCC? Sainz has an answer!

The Spaniard, when asked about how they will approach the season finale, had an answer which revealed Ferrari can take two approaches.
Sainz revealed, “We’re clearly on a bit of a defense mode because Merc were untouchable today. So in Abu Dhabi, we need to expect them to win. And we need to either do damage limitation or go for the win ourselves also.”
