We were just very unlucky, but we weren’t quick enough either,” update an upset Lando Norris as the McLaren had a nightmare for the second weekend in a row. The clouds of bad luck seemed to have gone away during the Australian GP’s double-point haul, but despite the Baku upgrades, the happiness hasn’t knocked at the doors of the Woking outfit. And the CEO Zak Brown gives a moody reason.

McLaren was way behind in their developmental race despite having a long-term plan from the beginning of last year. And though Oscar Piastri became the first of the three rookies to score points, the team has just been on a repeat telecast of ending up at the back of the grid. But why is that?

Talking to the F1 Nations podcast, Brown answers that. He said, “I think race cars are temperamental in their characteristics. Obviously, the great race cars are good in all conditions. We have a car that doesn’t like the heat. It is kind of rear-limited. Miami was hard. It was a new circuit. And it lacked some grip, as a new circuit would. So Miami was a circuit kind of like Bahrain, which kind of doesn’t suit our car.”

While perhaps the reason for the forgettable show stands identified, is it enough for the massively talented Norris to stay?

While TP Andrea Stella has stated that the team has a betterment plan in place. CEO Zak Brown has taken a realistic view. He knows what may happen if they don’t deliver Norris a car matching his skills.

Brown said, “Ultimately, when his contract is next up if we are not performing and he doesn’t feel he can win races and can compete for the championship, then I think anybody, driver or team member for that matter [would consider an exit], we are all here to win.”
