“Working on my masterpiece, I’ll be the one to decide when it’s finished,” wrote Lewis Hamilton on Instagram after the world began writing him off only after a few inferior races in 2022. While Mercedes did go on to better itself towards the end of the campaign, the 2023 campaign remains an underwhelming one. A bad spell with McLaren-Honda pushed Fernando Alonso to hang his boots, though only temporarily. And now the world is scared to see a repeat of the same with Lewis Hamilton as Mercedes hasn’t managed to come out of the slump to give Hamilton a race-winning machine.
Mercedes’ troubles don’t seem to end as their champion’s contract lasts only till the end of this campaign and the challenger is not matching the man’s caliber. And the conjecture around the Briton stay seems to be brimming with speculations. While Toto Wolff has said he doesn’t have Plan B considering Hamilton’s departure, the fear perhaps is always there. And considering the loyal nature of the 7x champion, Wolff has something to say about the time when Lewis leaves.
In an exclusive interview with Motorsports Italy, the interviewer asked Wolff, “You don’t think it’s possible that Lewis could say ‘Okay, I’ve given everything, I’m stopping’?”
To this Wolff replied, saying, “I think when it happens, he will tell us in time. I don’t think he’s going to stop on short notice. He’s not someone who would leave us in a difficult position. The riders can obviously make their own decisions, but I’m sure Lewis will do it without hurting the team. I would also add that we will look around that day and I believe that the team is still eager to find other solutions.”

His much younger teammate fared better than Hamilton in 2022. While the team later did come to clarify that it was because Lewis was running multiple sets up to gather data for the betterment of their bouncing machine. And as it stands, even in 2023, Russell has outperformed Hamilton at least on Saturdays as the champion visibly cannot become one with the car. And now Wolff has come out to accept that the team should listen to him.
According to motorsport-total.com, Toto Wolff said, “We are dealing with the big concept of the driver’s position. Obviously, this is one of the most important things. It’s about where the driver has the best feeling in the car. This is something that Lewis expresses very clearly. And if a seven-time world champion has an opinion, then it is important to listen to it.”
