Remember how Fernando Alonso got fed up with McLaren’s promise of delivering a competitive car and retired from the sport? Albeit for 2 years, as he made a comeback later on. Lewis Hamilton seems to be stuck in a similar situation, with Mercedes promising a competitive car but only providing a semi-decent car. The Briton is hungry and the subpar W14 would not do. As doubt arises around the last hopes for improving the pace, Toto Wolff comes forward to clarify Lewis Hamilton’s contract situation. What did Toto Wolff say?

By the looks of it, Lewis Hamilton’s title chances seem to be hanging in the balance forever. The W14 turned out to be a blunder, with Hamilton criticizing the concept. As a result, Mercedes is coming with a major upgrade package to Monaco. However, the hopes around this ray of hope seem to be fading. Last month, Toto Wolff suggested that the upgrade shows a positive trajectory, whereas recently he suggested that the upgrades will only solve a few problems and provide a better platform for future upgrades.

With the hopes for a positive impact from the upgrades declining, Toto Wolff was recently asked about Lewis Hamilton’s contract situation and the rumors of him joining Ferrari going around. Hamilton wants a competitive car and Mercedes is unable to provide him with one. Wolff explained how these transfer rumors come up every other year whenever the contract is extended. However, Wolff turned down all the rumors as he suggested that the Briton and the team discuss the terms of the contract without any time pressure.

Mercedes is still looking to find a way to catch up to the Red Bull. As Mercedes has not been able to come up with an answer for over 18 months, Peter Windsor put their downfall down to the dominance that Mercedes had in the late 2010s. The Silver Arrows were ashamed to look elsewhere and kept looking for answers within which never came. As a result, they’re now lagging behind and are paying the price.

According to F1maximaal.nl, Peter Windsor on his YouTube channel said, “If Mercedes knew the answer, they would fix it. It’s the question that people at Mercedes themselves haven’t been able to answer for eighteen months. Because of their success, they probably thought they could, that they could move mountains. They didn’t have to go outside their own framework to know how to do it. They paid the price for that and still pay the price.”
