The 2022 silly season has taken a few victims in drivers and team principals alike. All the drama began after Sebastian Vettel‘s retirement announcement triggered a chain of events. Most teams prefer to keep their business under wraps, however, Williams did not believe in secrecy. This is why the British team made the Logan Sargeant announcement before the American even had his super license.
The American’s Williams seat depended on him scoring enough points in the last race of the F2 season to acquire a super license. Sargeant scored the necessary points and go the seat. However, Sargeant’s early announcement and sort of ‘reservation’ for the seat had a usual feeling to it. The now ex-boss, Jost Capito, has revealed the reasoning behind the decision.

As per Grande Premio, Capito revealed how an early announcement was fair to other drivers, like Mick Schumacher and Antonio Giovinazzi who were looking for a seat on the grid.
“We also talked with other pilots” revealed Capito. “So I think it’s unfair, if we already know what we’re going to do, to leave, for example, Mick [Schumacher] or [Antonio] Giovinazzi, or whoever is in the running, waiting.” (Translated by Google)
“If you know what you’re doing, I think it’s fair to tell them what you’re planning; and if you decide to tell them, you can also make it public,” he added.

Sargeant lost the 2020 F3 championship by four points. Luckily, the American chose to stay in the division. Charouz Racing provided Sargeant with the opportunity to race again, which has led him to F1 now.
Talking with the Feeder series Podcast, Sargeant said, “Ultimately, I guess everything happens for a reason because I probably wouldn’t have been here if I won that championship. Obviously in the moment it was super disappointing, but looking back at it, maybe it was for the better. You have to try and spin it and look at the positive of it.”
