Being a Formula 1 driver is not easy. In today’s highly professional scene, having talent alone is not enough to enter the sport. Colton Herta has learned this the hard way. The FIA’s super license rules have acted as an impediment to his potential race seat at AlphaTauri. He has now spoken up.

Colton Herta was the front-runner for the 2023 AlphaTauri seat. Pierre Gasly is probably on his way to Alpine, and Red Bull were keen to sign the American to their stable of drivers. However, the FIA’s super license mandate means that he might not even be eligible to take part in the sport.

He has now spoken to Motorsport.com about how he does not want the pity of the FIA.

“But from their point of view and with the current points structure, I do understand. I don’t want to come in as ‘an exception’ either.” (Translated using Google translate)

Rather, the American is keen to see IndyCar receive recognition to allow other drivers to also have a fair shot at the super license. “I understand the position of the FIA. However, I think that IndyCar does not receive sufficient recognition in the points structure for the super license.”

Since he is short of 8 points to receive his super license, it seems as though Herta’s chances for a seat for 2023 are long gone. After a superb showing at the Italian Grand Prix, a certain Dutch driver is now a candidate for AlphaTauri‘s seat for 2023.

However, he went on to spill the beans on his rumored connect with Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko. “And as the media had noticed yesterday, I went to Austria to meet Helmut Marko. Those are the facts.”
