After four torrid and disappointing years with McLaren, the two-time champion, Fernando Alonso left the sport in 2018. It was believed that McLaren’s inability to challenge Mercedes for the throne provoked the Spaniard to take the harsh decision.
However, before leaving F1, Alonso left some hints regarding a potential comeback. And with the new car regulations to take place from next season, which apparently will reset the order of the grid, lured the Spaniard to make a return.
Fernando Alonso makes a comeback with new/rebranded Alpine this season. Alpine is previously known as Renault, with whom Alonso clinched the two world titles.

Fernando Alonso reveals ‘ambitious’ program for Alpine’s 2022 engine
Meanwhile, in an Alpine event in Barcelona, Fernando Alonso faced the media where he answered questions from the Spanish press. And as expected, the majority of the questions were related to the next season.
However, during the press conference, the Spaniard gave a slight preview regarding Alpine’s 2022 engine development.

“The optimism for 2022 is the same as when I signed up to return to F1. We are all with the same hopes. Obviously, dreaming is free: the whole Alpine is working on the basis of this enthusiasm,” said the two-time world champion, Fernando Alonso.
“All the F1 teams know that in 2022 with the change of the rules there could be a shuffling of cards, so why can’t we be the favorites? We wouldn’t be here if we thought we were at the bottom of the grid. We all work with the illusion of being on top” (Quotes translated via Google)
