When Stefano Domenicali took over the role of Formula 1’s CEO in 2021, he didn’t shy away from expressing his desire that F1 drivers should be more than just drivers. Being the face of the sport, he urged the drivers to take on bigger responsibilities as well. However, there have been a few drivers who have always understood this responsibility. The wheels of benevolence were set in motion by the seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, whose recent charitable endeavors have inspired a fellow racer, Pierre Gasly, to join the cause propagated by the ‘Make A Wish’ Foundation.
Lewis Hamilton, renowned not only for his racing prowess but also for his philanthropic efforts, has become a symbol of compassion in the Formula 1 community. His latest act of kindness unfolded when Mercedes orchestrated a surprise for three-year-old Morgan Riddler, diagnosed with terminal cancer in October 2021.
Morgan’s wish to attend the British Grand Prix seemed elusive until Mercedes, led by the 38-year-old Brit, brought a piece of the racetrack to the young fan. Presenting him with an earlier version of the W13, an F1 car with an estimated value of $15 million, Mercedes exemplified the compassionate side of racing, creating lasting memories for little Morgan.

Pierre Gasly follows in Lewis’ footsteps and becomes the ambassador for ‘Make A Wish’ Foundation
Beyond singular acts of generosity, Lewis Hamilton’s commitment to global causes is profound. Previously recognized as the most charitable athlete in the Sunday Times Giving List, the British racing icon allocates 7% of his earnings to various causes, focusing on education, youth, and employment on a global scale. The Mission 44 foundation, a testament to his dedication, aims to foster diversity in motorsports, providing opportunities for individuals from different ethnic backgrounds.
Now, it appears that Hamilton’s altruistic spirit has ignited a spark in another F1 driver, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly. Gasly recently announced his ambassadorship for the Make a Wish Foundation, an organization dedicated to granting the most cherished wishes of children diagnosed with critical illnesses, often cancer. Sharing common values with the foundation, Gasly expressed his commitment to bringing light into the lives of these children, making their dreams a reality.
The announcement came via Gasly’s Instagram, where he shared his pride and happiness in supporting the foundation. In his caption, Gasly stated, “It is an honor to be able to join this cause, and to bring light into the lives of children with critical illnesses by making their dreams a reality.”

Domenicali’s call for drivers to lead by example, understand their influence as the face of Formula 1, and recognize their substantial responsibility has found resonance in the actions of drivers like Hamilton and now Gasly.
However, as Formula 1 drivers increasingly embrace roles as activists, a few challenges have emerged that undermine F1’s call for responsibility.
F1 drivers face criticism for Hypocrisy and Privilege as they take on bigger responsibilities
The ‘We Race As One’ campaign, initiated by Formula 1, reflects a growing desire among drivers to advocate for various causes, extending beyond the initial focus on racial injustice and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lewis Hamilton has faced accusations of hypocrisy and criticism of privilege. Despite his efforts to address his carbon footprint, some argue that his involvement in F1 undermines his environmental stance.
The association of environmental activism with privilege raises questions about the accessibility of motorsport, particularly with the substantial financial investment required to enter karting. The concept of privilege extends beyond individual actions to the broader issue of “pay drivers” in F1, exemplified by Lance Stroll, who faces accusations of nepotism due to his father’s team ownership. This situation contributes to the perception that F1 is an exclusive realm for the financially privileged.

However, social media, despite its potential for negative backlash, provides a platform for drivers to showcase a more relatable side. Hamilton’s activism sets a precedent, emphasizing the impact of genuine actions over mere words.
