As things stand, Alpine, formerly Renault , are the biggest underachievers in the recent history of this sport. Even before the mammoth $218,000,000 infusion of funds courtesy of a consortium led by Ryan Reynolds, the Enstone-based team had a plethora of technical and other resources at their disposal. Yet, the French team could never formalize their potential into the tall claims they made with ineffective ‘five-year’ plans. Now, with a massive upheaval in their ranks, Pierre Gasly has spoken out about the dire straits they find themselves in.
When ex-boss Otmar Szafnauer was sacked by the team, he called the upper echelons of the team delusional (or with a similar phraseology). And with the uninspiring results of the Dutch GP Qualifying session today, Gasly has decided to open up about the current state of affairs at the team.

While the leadership boat at Alpine seems unsteady, the 27-year-old French racing ace has decided to assume the mantle with a hard-hitting assessment of the team’s failures and the path ahead in the wake of yet another disappointing outing, this time around in the Netherlands.

Post-Quali, he was quoted as saying, “This weekend, we are overweight and unfortunately it costs us almost a tenth, that’s what we missed to go to Q3. I have two or three other ideas on things that we could have tried. ” [translated via Google]
He continued, “I think there are several reasons, several points on which I think we can get performance quickly, by pushing the car more, trying to be on weight.”
But with all of Gasly’s ideas and concoctions to make Alpine faster, the team has left him with an uphill task of extracting the absolute maximum from the machinery at his disposal.

With the next set of rule changes coming in in 2026, the teams are more or less left with the same or similar cars they began racing last year. Even though incremental changes can be made to improve performance, the philosophy of the cars cannot change much. And it is here that Gasly finds himself at a disadvantage.
While talking about his 2023 machinery, Gasly admitted to being restricted by “quite a small window to really make it [A523] operate at its best” . All of this comes down to the inherent flaws the car suffers from, and with their mind currently on fixing a stable hierarchy, this awkward situation for Gasly might not even be addressed.
