Fernando Alonso will continue racing in Formula One after extending his contract with Alpine. Both Alonso and Alpine have massive expectations from the 2022 season. It is unclear whether they will continue their partnership after the 2022 season; Alpine Executive Director Marcin Budkowski mentioned they will have discussions about a contract extension in the future.

Both Alonso and Marcin are targeting a title run in the 2022 season. In 2021, the French outfit also signed F2 champion Oscar Piastri to be their reserve driver. Marcin specified that it is not a direct competition between Piastri and Alonso for 2023.

Let’s see next year first: Alpine team boss on Fernando Alonso

It is likely that Alonso could continue driving in 2023 if the Alpine car is fast next season. If he signs a contract extension, then it might be difficult for Piastri to get a chance to drive in F1. But Budkowski mentioned that they have to wait for the 2022 car and its performance to make that decision.

“How are we going to make that decision? Well, let’s see next year first. If the car is quick and Fernando is happy, then we’ll have one type of discussion. If that’s not the case, then we’ll have a different type of discussion.” said Marcin.

“But certainly we have a great talent with Oscar in the wings, and if there’s no seat available at Alpine, I’m sure we’ll find a solution for him to drive a Formula 1 car and stay in the Alpine family.

Oscar’s announcement, beyond being an announcement as such that he will be a reserve driver, comes with an awful lot of other things.” said Alpine team boss.

Let’s hope that Piastri gets an opportunity to shine in Formula 1. He is too talented a driver to just sit in the garage and do simulator work. It would be interesting to see what the 2022 season holds in store for the team and Alonso.
