Things have become quite hectic for Red Bull & AlphaTauri, following Daniel Ricciardo‘s unfortunate injury. The Australian driver suffered a metacarpal fracture during the second practice session at the Zandvoort circuit, leaving a vacancy in the AlphaTauri for the upcoming race. It is just Ricciardo’s 3rd race since his sudden comeback at the Hungarian GP a month back to the RBR sister team. This definitely put Christian Horner & Co. in a fix on who can replace the Aussie on a temporary basis. Out of nowhere, a 52-year-old veteran’s name was rumored to be in the mix, on which Horner pounced to get some banter out as well!

Ricciardo’s mishap occurred when he collided with the barrier at the banked Turn 3 during practice. The incident came in the wake of a crash involving his compatriot Oscar Piastri. Explaining his decision, Ricciardo noted that he had to choose between avoiding Piastri and the wall, ultimately opting for the barrier. Unfortunately, his hands remained on the steering wheel, resulting in the impact exacerbating his injury.

Seizing the opportunity, David Coulthard, a former Red Bull driver, humorously applied to Christian Horner to become Ricciardo’s reserve driver. Coulthard’s Instagram post featured a PowerPoint presentation entitled ‘Why I should be Daniel’s reserve driver’, highlighting four points that he believed made him a suitable candidate:

  1. Demonstrated speed on the track.
  2. Claimed Red Bull’s first-ever podium.
  3. Established rapport with the team’s engineers.
  4. The prospect of becoming the 7th oldest F1 driver ever.

Horner, despite his concerns for Ricciardo’s well-being, took Coulthard’s jest in stride and responded with a witty tone. He thanked Coulthard for his application and acknowledged the numerous crash-related incidents the veteran driver had been involved in. Horner playfully suggested that Coulthard’s presence could make Fernando Alonso feel youthful again, considering the age gap. Alonso would certainly be feeling why Christian dragged him in, regardless let’s hope it’s all in good spirit as always.

Despite Coulthard’s whimsical approach, the reserve driver role went to Liam Lawson, a 21-year-old New Zealander. As a Red Bull junior since 2019, Lawson was chosen to make his Formula 1 Grand Prix debut, filling in the gap left by Ricciardo’s absence. This marked Lawson’s opportunity to step into the spotlight as he joined Yuki Tsunoda as a teammate for the current season.

In 2019, Liam Lawson entered the Formula 3 scene with MP Motorsport, finishing 11th in the championship.
