Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff have developed a Formula 1 dynasty at Mercedes. As a driver and Team Principal, respectively, they’ve shown what exemplary men they are in talent, grit, and personality. However, Wolff explains why their strong personalities have never crossed swords to hinder their friendship and the team.

Recently, Toto Wolff sat down with David Coulthard for Channel 4 Sport. During the interview, Wolff explained his relationship with the 7-time Champion, Lewis Hamilton, and what it means for the team. He also went on to disclose a side of Hamilton that people often fail to see.

Wolff began, “Lewis and I have been together now for 10 years. In a way it was Alpha Males in a different situation that were put into this together.”

He explained, “Today we’re friends but we care. I care for him, he cares for me and he cares for the team also.”

However, as Wolff narrated, sometimes the ego and personalities get the better of each other in high-pressure situations. “Sometimes the Lion comes out and you hear these angry messages.”

But he contextualized this by disclosing a side of the Brit that many seem to not see. “He’s the one that, after hearing that he is apologetic because he has a big heart.”

According to Wolff, this mega partnership is not going to end anytime soon. He believes that irrespective of rumors, he is clear with Lewis Hamilton on extending his Mercedes contract.

Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton have achieved it all with Mercedes. However, that elusive 8th title for Lewis Hamilton is still evading him. Mercedes’ 2022 woes gave rise to rumors that the Brit might retire at the end of 2022, although his current contract ends in 2023. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has dismissed these claims.

According to him, “I have no doubt that whatever we agree on a contract extension, which is going to happen, that we both are always going to discuss, very openly, what does the future hold.”

He explained, “Over time we have just grown together. We are totally transparent with each other. Lewis will be the first one to say ‘I can’t do this anymore’.”
