An underdog, and underrated F1 talent, Alex Albon, just did an interview with ‘The Race’, where he got up candid about his time at Red Bull. He shared his struggles and talked about his strengths and his growth. The Thai-British driver believes that growing as a person, in addition to growing as a driver, contributes to a better career altogether.

Albon shared some of his darkest times, some of his inspirations, and his way of navigating his driving career. In 2019, the Williams man got promoted to Red Bull from Toro Rosso because he held immense promise and potential. Eventually, he was dropped by the Austrian team the following year, as he was not able to match up with his future World Champion teammate, Max Verstappen. Albon claims that people have forgotten how good he was and how good he potentially can be.
Talking about his journey, he said, “I’ve always had to fight for it. I’ve always been feeling like every year has just been getting into the next year, getting into next year. That’s been the case since I was 14, 15 years old. So, I’m used to it.”
“I’ve had it twice in my career where I didn’t think there was a future in sight for me in motorsport. When you go through this feeling of being right on the edge of, I guess, survival, you actually get to a point where you start caring less – it’s almost like, you’re in it, and you’re worrying, but then you’ve got nothing to lose. And you can use that mentality as a good thing.”
“I imagine they looked at what I’ve done before. I think people forget that I had actually a very strong start to F1! That’s why I was in Red Bull,” he added.
Albon talks about his journey with Williams. He delves into how it is a lot different than driving for Red Bull.
Alex Albon is happy to be at Williams!
The 26-year-old gave an insight into how things aren’t the same at Williams in comparison to the Austrian team. After Red Bull gave Albon a green get-go signal to join Williams after his year away from the grid, Albon came back as a different man. A more mature one, he claimed.

Alex Albon explained, “I feel more controlled [in the Williams], and feel like I know exactly what it’s going to do all the time. The car’s moving more but it’s more predictable, it’s more in tune with what you like in the car, what you do.”
“And that’s slightly different to how I left off in 2020 with the Red Bull,” he said, in conclusion.

Alex Albon definitely holds the potential to drive for a top team. But will he live up to his own potential in the upcoming seasons and maybe walk in the footsteps of Valtteri Bottas and George Russell, who went to Mercedes from Williams?
