Almost all athletes all around the globe need to be physically fit, and Formula 1 drivers are no exception. From maneuvering at high speeds, to braking and then again picking up pace, all the while fighting against g-forces, this sport needs nerve. So naturally, F1 drivers go through a lot of training to stay on top of their game, as Lewis Hamilton unravels the “painful” side to it.

The Mercedes driver revealed the backstory of training for the sport. Even though the drivers are mostly ‘super-fit’, they always need to keep up their training game top-notch. Talking about this, the seven-time world champion shared his views with The Mirror in 2019.

Hamilton conveyed, “Every year, when you get back in to training it’s painful. I don’t have a trainer, but this year I’ve worked with several different people.”

“I’ve tried different things and feel stronger than I’ve been in a long time.”

Mercedes AMG F1 boss Toto Wolff appreciated the Briton’s fitness as he went on to share, “He’s in a super mental state, the best I’ve seen so far. He looks physically and mentally in shape – half an hour before the session started he was all ready to go.”

Training an F1 driver needs to go through

For any normal individual, F1 might look like driving an open-wheeled car. However, there are endless efforts that go behind driving these cars. As it’s not at all easy to go over 300 plus kilometers an hour and then come back below 100, take a turn and then again push to maximum limits.

The g-forces endured by these drivers are humongous. The drivers are also trained to cope with the impact of the crash just in case. They need to have superior muscle strength in their necks to withstand immense force during races. In addition, they need to have maximum inner core strength as well.

The drivers need to have a perfectly fine heart condition as the maximum beats per minute might reach 170 at times during the race, which is way over any normal adult even when they are running. Stamina being a major factor, the drivers need to have very a highly scrutinized diet as well.

Lewis Hamilton admitted that he loses as much as 4 kilograms during hot and humid races. So, it is a big deal for every F1 driver to maintain the highest level of fitness.
